How Do You Become a Life Coach in Texas?

Texas doesn't license life coaches, so becoming a life coach in Texas means training, logging coaching hours and earning a voluntary credential. Most coaches finish an ICF-accredited program, such as CoachRICE: A Leadership Coaching Program (Rice University, Doerr Institute for New Leaders), then apply for the ICF Associate Certified Coach (ACC) credential, which requires 60 hours of coach training, 100 hours of coaching experience (75 paid) and 10 hours of mentor coaching. Training runs $4,300 to $13,500 across the programs listed below. Texas coaches connect through ICF North Texas and ICF Houston. To open a practice, file a Texas LLC for $300 and plan on a no-fee franchise tax report due May 15.

Life Coach Certification in Texas: What You Need to Know

You don't need a state license to become a life coach in Texas. What you need is training from an ICF-accredited program, logged coaching hours and, if you want the credential most clients recognize, the ICF Associate Certified Coach (ACC). This guide covers each of those steps for Texas.

Texas coaching demand follows its big employers. The Greater Houston Partnership's 2026 Houston Facts counts 27 Fortune 500 headquarters in the Houston region, 21 of them in energy. Dallas is home to AT&T and Energy Transfer, Fort Worth to American Airlines, and Opportunity Austin lists Apple, Dell, Samsung Austin Semiconductor and Tesla each with 6,000 or more employees in the Austin region.

San Antonio adds a large military client base: greater:SATX lists Joint Base San Antonio with more than 82,000 direct employees, followed by H-E-B and USAA. Central Texas has Fort Hood, and El Paso has Fort Bliss, the metro's largest employer.

Coaches in Dallas-Fort Worth join ICF North Texas, which grew out of the North Texas Coaches' Association. Houston, San Antonio and Austin each have their own chapter.

Do You Need a Life Coach Certification in Texas?

No. Texas has no life coach license or required certification. Licensed mental health care is a separate field: the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council licenses professional counselors, psychologists, social workers and marriage and family therapists. As a coach, you work on goals and action, and you refer clients who need clinical care.

Certification is voluntary, and an ICF credential shows clients you have met a published training and experience standard. The ICF sets three levels, ACC, PCC and MCC, each with more training and coaching hours. The ACC requires 60 hours of coach training, 100 hours of coaching experience (75 paid) and 10 hours of mentor coaching, and the application costs $175 for ICF members or $325 for non-members. Compare the levels in the certification guide.

How to Become a Life Coach in Texas

Each Texas metro favors a different niche. Houston's energy companies and the Texas Medical Center, with more than 60 member institutions, suit executive and health coaching. Dallas-Fort Worth's corporate headquarters suit leadership coaching, Austin's tech employers suit career coaching, and San Antonio, Killeen and El Paso have large military and veteran communities.

ICF Houston started as the Houston Coaching Network in 2002 and became a charter chapter in 2008; it hosts Coach Cafe meetups and Zoom programs. ICF San Antonio runs a monthly 2nd Tuesday Takeover, mastermind groups and credentialing office hours, and ICF Greater Austin, chartered in 2013, serves Greater Austin and Central Texas.
